Following a bilateral series between Japan and Hong Kong at the 4th edition of the East Asia Cup, the upcoming 5th edition is scheduled to be held in Hangzhou, China, in May 2023. This time around, hosts China will join Hong Kong and Japan for a Tri-Series at the East Asia Cup.

While Korea misses out on the event for the second consecutive time, China, the hosts and winners of the 2019 edition, Hong Kong, the defending champions from the 2017 and 2022 editions, and Japan will compete in a double round-robin format, with the top two teams advancing to the Final showdown.
