Boon’s short-term contract spans one month, during which he will work closely with the players to improve their batting skills and overall performance standards. He is set to serve as a betting consultant for the Sri Lanka Women’s senior and A-team Squad, and the Sri Lanka Under-17s men’s emerging team.

His programme will include ‘technical and tactical sessions aimed at improving the players’ overall batting approach and individual performance. His tenure comes after R Sridhar, India’s former fielding coach, conducted a “comprehensive 10-day fielding programme” earlier this month for both top men’s and women’s cricketers in Sri Lanka.

Boon brings with him a wealth of experience from a career that has spanned decades. He previously held key roles as the head coach of Leicestershire and the England Under-19 team. Notably he was also England’s team analyst under Duncan Fletcher during the 2005 Ashes victory.

The specialized program commenced on 7 May and will involve men’s and women’s national squads, emerging squads, premier club players and the National U-19 team and Women’s A team, stated by Sri Lanka Cricket (SLC).

The decision to rope in Boon aligns with Sri Lanka cricket’s broader vision to invest in Global experienced coaches under short-term contracts.

Rajasthan Royal’s high performance director Zubin Bharucha also ran a short successful program in 2024, in an effort to improve batting standards. Experienced players like Wasim Akram and Jonty Rhodes were also hired in the past ten years to run brief bowling and fielding programmes.

Sri Lankan Men are set to return in action in June as they host Bangladesh in a two-match Test series. The first test will commence on June 17 at the Galle International Stadium and the second on June 25 at the Sinhalese Sports Club in Colombo.
