All-rounder Maddy Villiers’ and Mia Rogers’ fifty seal a comprehensive win for Durham

The Essex openers Alice Macleod and skipper Grace Scrivens (25 off 34 balls) got their side off to a solid start with a 62-run opening partnership, with the pair scoring confidently at over six runs an over, after the Durham skipper Hollie Armitage won the toss and inserted them to bat first at County Ground, Chelmsford.

Grace Thompson broke the stand, by sending Alice Macleod (32 off 29 balls) back to the pavilion in the 10th over of the innings, providing the much-needed first breakthrough for Durham. Another vital 51-run partnership for the 3rd wicket between Sophia Smale and Ariana Dowse took them to the 120-run mark. Maddy Villiers picked up the wicket of Sophia Smale (27 off 51 balls) to provide the crucial 3rd breakthrough for her side in the 25th over of the innings.

Essex suffered a horrible collapse as they lost their last 7 wickets for just 58 runs, getting bundled out for 178, with more than 10 overs to spare. The lack of support from the other end meant Ariana Dowse (43* off 79 balls) was seven runs short of her well-deserved half-century. Maddy Villiers (8.5-0-28-3), Grace Thompson (8-0-28-2), Katie Levick (8-1-28-2), and Phoebe Turner (8-1-40-2) were the stand-out performers with the ball for Durham.

The Essex bowling unit made the Durham batters work hard for each run however, it wasn’t enough for them to get those four points, as Durham chased down the total with 6 wickets in hand and 70 balls to spare. Mia Rogers (66* off 88 balls) stayed unbeaten on a calm and composed half-century. Maddy Villiers (46 off 76 balls), fell four runs short of her half-century, Emma Marlow (30 off 32 balls), and wicket-keeper batter Bess Heath (13* off 12 balls) chipped in with crucial contributions with the bat for Durham as they sealed a comprehensive victory.

The 98-run 4th wicket partnership between Maddy Villiers and Mia Rogers was the highest partnership of the run chase. Beth MacGregor (8-0-45-2) and Eva Gray (7-1-16-1) were sensational with the ball, while Abtaha Maqsood (9-0-44-0) and Sophia Smale (8.2-0-30-0) were impressive with the ball for Essex.

Alice Capsey, Alexa Stonehouse fightback for Surrey as the game ends in a thrilling tie

The Blaze top-order tore apart the Surrey bowling line-up in a batting masterclass after skipper Kira Chathli won the toss and inserted them to bat first at the Kent County Cricket Ground, Beckenham. Kathryn Bryce (56 off 66 balls) and wicket-keeper batter Amy Jones stitched a massive 113-run partnership for the 2nd wicket, after the opening batter Tammy Beaumont fell cheaply to Alexa Stonehouse in the 3rd over of the innings.

Danielle Gregory broke the ominous stand by sending the dangerous opening batter Amy Jones (80 off 76 balls) back to the pavilion in the 22nd over of the innings to provide the 2nd breakthrough for Surrey. Cassidy McCarthy picked up the wicket of Sophia Dunkley (20 off 34 balls) to provide the first breakthrough for the Blaze in the 10th over of the run chase.

A crucial 74-run partnership for the 3rd wicket between Paige Scholfield and Alice Capsey revived the run chase for Surrey. Georgia Elwiss broke the stand, by sending Paige Scholfield back to the pavilion (37 off 31 balls) in the 25th over of the run chase. After her departure, Surrey kept losing wickets from the other end, however, Alice Capsey held forth from one end, taking the attack to the opposition to keep the run chase alive for her side. She also completed her power-packed century (125 off 96 balls) before she was dismissed by Grace Ballinger in the 46th over of the run chase to provide the 9th breakthrough for the Blaze.

However, the lower-order led by Alexa Stonehouse (32* off 18 balls) refused to give up as they eventually managed to nullify the total by levelling the scores courtesy of an unbeaten 39-run partnership for the 10th wicket alongside Danielle Gregory (8* off 13 balls). The game ended in a tie, and both sides shared two points each. Georgia Elwiss (7-0-35-3), Cassidy McCarthy (10-0-59-2), Grace Ballinger (10-0-76-2), and Kathyrn Bryce (9-0-54-1) were the standout performers with the ball for The Blaze.
